I’m 27. Don’t smoke. Don’t drink. Eat moderately healthy. Not overweight. The problem I am about to discuss I have had since March, but it rarely happens. Recently it’s started to happen more though.
I go to sleep early these days as I’ve just started University. Around about 10-11pm. I have to travel 31 miles to get to University and another 31 miles back, so I need to rise early to get the trains.
Anyway, after falling asleep, usually within the first hour I will wake up. Now this is the scary right here. It’s as if, my eyes are open, I’m aware of my surroundings, I can move my body, but I am still asleep/in a very very disorientated state. When I say disorientated, it’s not what a normal person would experiences. It’s as if my brain hasn’t yet woken up properly.
Whilst this is happening I am telling my body to "Wake up, Wake up". At this point it gets a little frightening and I am just telling my body to snap out of whatever it is it’s in.
Most the time it’s also difficult to breath. I am not gasping for air. It’s as if my lungs can’t take enough air. Or my windpipe isn’t opened fully. Please don’t suggest asthma, it’s nothing like asthma. The breathing difficulty will last up to around 10 seconds.
It’s also worth noting that I tend to wake up with a dead arm at the same time. I am forever lying on, or under my arm. I need a big, big, pillow that wont affect my circulation when lying under my arm.
I’ve took this to the doctors, and she gave me nasal spray (wtf?!). I’m not fighting her for a sleep study as she does not understand what’s going on.
At first I thought it was alcohol that caused it. It used to happen when I alcohol. So I stopped drinking completely. Then I thought it was smoking, so I stopped smoking. After quitting both, it still happens.
I hate to label it as stress, but I have never had it this bad. I had it Friday night, and it just so happens I was stressing over the kids party the following day. I’ve had it Sunday night, and last night, both nights I’ve been stressed about university.
Yesterday was an awful day. Out the house at 6am, had 6 lectures and didn’t get back till 8pm. Shattered completely.
Has anyone every experienced anything like this?
Would low blood pressure cause something like this?
Someone suggested sleep paralysis, although I don’t have the chest pain that’s associated with it, and I can often move my arms, and body to a certain extent.
